Discipleship and Money

Caldwell's young adults catch up with each other over lunch.
Dear Caldwell,

In thinking about economic disparity in America today, it doesn’t take a lot of imagination to conjur up the kind of story we find in the gospels. Just what would Jesus say to his followers when told that the wealthiest 20% of Americans hold 87% of the nation’s wealth (including the 36% held by the top 1%)? How does that relate to Christ’s teachings about money and the Old Testament understading of what it means to live in a fair covenant community?

About 25 folks plunged into that topic Sunday night. The discussion, which touches each of us, rich or poor, continues this coming Sunday night at 6 when Rev. Dr. Diane Mowrey, our Parish Associate, will remind us how forebearers like John Calvin viewed work and economics. She will also lead a conversationl centering on a PC(USA) paper about a Christian response to the balance of wealth in society. You can download that paper for pre-reading at http://www.pcusa.org/media/uploads/acswp/pdf/economic-crisis-policy.pdf

Also last Sunday, 25 or so of Caldwell’s burgeoning crop of young adults gathered for lunch and conversation after worship. Thanks to all who came out and the energy they bring to our ministries.

Check back into the blog later this week for a preview of Sunday’s happenings.

Until then, “may the Lord be with you there.”

In Christ,

John
